Something to Reflect on

“A practitioner’s reflection can serve as a corrective to over-learning. Through reflection, he can surface and criticize the tacit understandings that have grown up around the repetitive experiences of a specialized practice, and can make new sense of the situations of uncertainty or uniqueness which he may allow himself to experience.”

Donald Schon

COACHING

Self reflection brings images of sitting quietly pondering some action we've taken or situation of which we've been part. It may seem ephemeral, a moment in time before moving on to the real work to be done. The truth is, though, self reflection is part of how we learn. We are always taking in information, every day of our lives. We ignore the bulk of it, thankfully, but then there are the more meaningful parts of our days that we take in. In an academic setting, reflecting on your work simply means to ask what's working, what's not, how can you do it better next time, etc.
This isn't the only context in which we self reflect, of course. We can reflect on our own lives and how we are doing in terms of our own plans. Here are ten questions you might start with to reflect on whether you are flourishing in your life and getting you thinking about what might need to change so that you can.

  1. Am I using my time wisely?

  2. Am I taking anything for granted?

  3. Am I employing a healthy perspective?

  4. Am I living true to myself?

  5. Am I waking up in the morning ready to take on the day?

  6. Am I thinking negative thoughts before I fall asleep?

  7. Am I putting enough effort into my relationships?

  8. Am I taking care of myself physically?

  9. Am I letting matters that are out of my control stress me out?

  10. Am I achieving the goals that I’ve set for myself?
