What’s trauma got to do with it?

Thoughts & Prompts
For the last several months during my counselling practicum with Veith House and now in private practice, I've been aware of the high number of people with trauma. For some, it's a big-T trauma from a single event or from years of abuse or witnessing the trauma of others that results in complex trauma. For many others, it's small-t trauma.
Small-t trauma occurs from various adverse life experiences; a little more than ordinary life stress, but not PTSD. Many ignore these types of traumas because they think they're no big deal. However, these small t-traumas happen over our lifetime and when not dealt with creating the maladaptive behaviours and thoughts that affect our everyday life. Thoughts of not being good enough, of being unimportant, or body dysmorphia are related to these types of small-t traumas. So are behaviours such as drinking too much, recklessness, or over-sexualization of self.
One of the best ways to work with trauma is through Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR. This form of therapy gets right to the heart of the issues - the memories you carry - and reprocesses them to become neutral rather than extremely disturbing. When we neutralize memories like this their effects also disappear. It's not for everyone, but maybe it's for you? Consider what small-t traumas you've had in your life.
Remember you can book a free 15-minute consult with me to see if we're a good fit.
Counseling is available at Natural Path Wellness on Ochterloney Street in Dartmouth or via telehealth through my own business.
